Introduction	The human mitochondrial 28S ribosomal protein S18a is encoded by the MRPS18A gene. The protein encoded by this gene is one of three that share significant sequence similarity with bacterial S18 proteins. The primary sequences of the three human mitochondrial S18 proteins do not exhibit a closer relationship among themselves compared to their prokaryotic S18 protein counterparts. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS18A is located on chromosome 3p.
